SUMMARY:The Role of Elected Officials and Running for Public Office Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This free workshop is open to those currently in office\, incumbents running for office\, and any Halifax County resident interested in running for public office or learning more about the election process. \n\nThe workshop is designed to cover two aspects of elected office: governance and running for public office. Topics include roles of elected officials\, economic development\, running for public office\, the election process\, deadlines\, and filing. \n\n\n\nSpeakers Include:\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Hartgrove serves as associate director of the Virginia Institute of Government (VIG) at the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. He leads the staff and daily operations of VIG. This includes providing local government professional and technical assistance and training programs. Charles worked as executive for Virginia local governments for over twenty years. He will cover governance and roles of elected officials. \n\n\n\nBryan David serves as a Program Director for the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service to advance economic development in Southern Virginia. His work is through a partnership between the Cooper Center and the Growth and Opportunity Region 3 Council. He leads the operations of the GO Virginia Region 3 Council and directly collaborates with an extensive network of partner organizations\, engaged residents\, and business leaders. Bryan will cover the importance of economic development in community competitiveness. \n\nLawrence "Larry" Roberts is the director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. Roberts' government service includes positions as Counselor to Governor Tim Kaine and Chief of Staff to Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. In each position he earned praise for working across the partisan aisle. In addition to working in government and politics\, Roberts was a successful lawyer in private practice for more than 20 years. Roberts will focus on running for public office. \n\n\n\nTammy Alexander serves as the Campaign Finance Compliance and Training Specialist for the Virginia Department of Elections. Heather Harding serves as the Halifax County Voter Registrar. They will cover the election process\, electronic filing\, and deadlines.
