The Bland Concert

The South Boston Lions Club will hold its annual James A. Bland Memorial Music Competition at The Prizery on March 5th from 2:00 - 5:30 PM. The contest will feature 18 vocalist and musicians between the ages of 12 and 18 who will perform a piece of classical music.  Contestants compete for cash prizes and the winners advance to regional contests and then to a statewide contest.  The competition is named in memory of James A. Bland a nineteenth century African-American composer and musician who composed hundreds of pieces of music during his lifetime including the Commonwealth of Virginia’s state song emeritus “Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny”.
